Let’s take a step backwards for a moment. As you can see Judy has given us a thorough explanation of what a spiritual mother is and the key points.
A spiritual mother is a woman possessing faith and spiritual maturity that enters into a nurturing relationship with a younger woman in order to encourage and equip her to live for God’s glory.
Here we see 3 key elements of a spiritual mother
-It is someone who nurtures a younger woman
-It is someone who encourages and equips a younger woman
-It is someone to teach a younger woman to live for God’s glory
So why is this important, and why should we do it? Let’s take a look at the mandate behind spiritual mothering.
In Titus 2:1, 3-5
1. But as for you, speak the things which are fitting for sound doctrine. 3. Older woman likewise are to be reverent in their behavior, not malicious gossips, nor enslaved too much wine, teaching what is good, 4. that they may encourage the young woman to love their husbands, to love their children, 5. to be sensible, pure, workers at home, kind, being subject to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be dishonored.
As you can see in verse 1 it speaks of teaching sound doctrine. Doctrines are what the Bible teaches on certain subjects and areas of our life. This passage is teaching us that a Spiritual Mother should specifically teach the things of the Lord.
In verse 3 it gives you some important characteristics of who should do the teaching. In our day and age an aged woman of faith is rare, so we can base it on spiritual maturity. And it is not just any older woman. It is a woman with certain characteristics. She needs to be reverent in her behavior, not a malicious gossip, she needs to be self controlled in all areas of her life, and they need to teach what is good.
In verses 4-5 we see what the older women are to teach to the younger women. There are seven very specifics instructions as what to teach.
Older women are to teach younger women
1. To love their husbands
2. To love their children
3. To be sensible
4. To be pure
5. To be workers at home
6. To be kind
7. To be subject to their own husbands
So why are these seven instructions important for a spiritual mother to teach anyway? If you take a look at Titus 2:5 it is so the word of God may not be dishonored.
Ladies of MDF, our goal for the women is that we raise up younger women in faith according to God’s word, so we can carry this mandate out generation after generation.
Psalm 78:4, 6-7 captures our thoughts.
We will tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the Lord, his power, and the wonders he has done…so that the next generation would know them, even the children yet to be born, and they in turn would tell their children. Then they would put their trust in God and would not forget his deeds but would keep his commands.
Susan Hunt puts it best in her book “Spiritual Mothering,” when we make an investment in younger women, we will be enriched personally, the sense of community in the local church will be deepened, society will be blessed, and God’s word will be honored.
