As some of you may know, I am a Decorative Artist. I was asked several months ago to be part of the Design Team for The Artist’s Club and my second design was just published in their September Catalog!
The Artist’s Club is a national retailer of designs and supplies for Decorative Artists. Based in Vancouver, WA, they sell items through catalogs, a web site and even an actual store. I’d love to go there some day!
The project I designed this time is a Christmas Light. I was sent the unfinished light and it was my job/privilege to design something “Christmassy” on it. I knew as soon as I saw the item exactly what I wanted to paint! Sometimes it takes a while for me to think of just the right thing, but not this time.
I base coated the front and the back with a light tan color and then painted a red bow with twisted ribbon cascading down either side and then added some holly leaves and some pine boughs. I enjoyed painting it very much and the Artist’s Club loved it!
I’ve been painting since I was about 14 years old (a long time 🙂 ) and I have sold lots of my creations at craft shows and I have been teaching classes for at least 20 years. But, for some reason, I never felt confident enough to design things to be sold commercially even though, that was a dream of mine. When this opportunity came, at first I just dismissed it thinking “no one will actually buy one of my designs”. But, one day I was reading Proverbs 26:15 and I saw the notes I had written in the margin of my Bible of Pastor Matt’s explanation of that verse. I had written that the verse was an example of how God wants us to take advantage of the opportunities He gives us. That verse is what gave me the courage to submit a design and I am thankful for the opportunity that God provided and for His words of encouragement to “go for it”.
In my opinion, it seems that God places desires in our hearts and then provides opportunities to use our talents and actually realize those dreams as a way to bring Him glory. So, is there anything you have always wanted to do or try? Pray about it and look for God to provide an opportunity to use your gifts and talents.
